Our History

Spanish tradition with Caribbean joy

At La Alpargatería, each pair of espadrilles tells a story that dates back more than a century, from the fields of Cervera del Río Alhama in La Rioja to the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. We are the fourth generation of a family of espadrille makers who, since 1905, have perfected the art of creating artisanal footwear, fusing tradition and modernity.

Family Tradition

From Cervera del Rio Alhama to Santo Domingo

Passionate about the art of espadrilles, Ricardo Fernández Alfaro and César García have turned their love for this craft into a project that not only preserves a rich family heritage, but also takes it into the future. They fuse innovation and tradition, exploring new materials and techniques that enhance the durability and versatility of classic espadrilles. In addition, they offer an exclusive customization experience at their flagship store in the Colonial City, where each pair becomes a unique piece.

Our Workshop

Colonial City of Santo Domingo

Our workshop is more than just a workspace; it is where Spanish heritage and the vibrant energy of the Caribbean come together.

We combine the espadrille tradition of La Rioja with the shoemaking art of the Dominican Republic through a team of artisans trained in small workshops in Santo Domingo since their youth. In this way, we create a high-quality local product that balances tradition and design, preserving an impeccable artisanal process, from the first stitch to the last detail.

The result is fresh, ecological and elegant footwear, made with natural materials such as jute, leather and cotton fabrics, always respecting the essence of artisanal manufacturing.
